Down the Rabbit Hole Series

In Shamanism by Mircea Eliade (1964) he explains that the pre-eminent shamanic technique is the passage from one cosmic region to another – from earth to the sky or from earth to the underworld. The three great cosmic regions are linked by a central axis. This axis passes through an opening, a hole. It is through this hole that shaman can fly up or down.

Surely this is echoed in  Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll?  Alice burning with curiosity runs after a rabbit and is just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge.

In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.

The Surrealist fascination with Alice in Wonderland is well known. As Louis Aragon said, “We are all children of Alice”.
